Several years ago I turned a log of spalted maple into a bedside lamp. I purchased a lamp shade from the local goodwill store and it worked out fine. Since it’s winter and too cold to work in my unheated garage-shop, I focus more on making stuff on my Shapeoko. I decided to see if I could make a lamp shade out of wood that would be “interesting” and somewhat match the décor of the lamp. The top and bottom pieces were cut out using the Shapeoko. The vertical slats were simply 1/8” x 7/8” x 9” long slats cut out on the table saw. They fit into the grooves cut out by the CNC. The ends of the slats were cut at 7 degrees to match the resulting angle due to the top circle being smaller than the bottom circle. Of course, different length slats could be used with slight modification to the angles.

The top and bottom circular pieces were cut out of ½” thick Baltic birch plywood. Using down cut bits saves a bit of sanding.

If I were to do it again, I think I would not cut the grooves for the slats all the way through so that the ends of the slats were not visible. Still, I’m happy with the way it worked out.
